Well I’m in my 30’s now living in Yorkshire with the other half, our beautiful boy Harry, two dogs (Rosie and Lily) and a cat (Pepper). I started this when I realised I was at the end of my maternity leave and my fabulous NCT friends were slowly leaving me one by one to venture back into the world of work. I have decided to be a stay at home Mum whilst figuring out what I want to do longer term work wise. To be honest I found it quite lonely sometimes and telling people stories of our everyday life on social media has kept me sane. So I hope this does the same for you, and even makes you smile sometimes.

Just like the series ‘Sex & the City’ that one of my best friends introduced me to at University Jilly Cooper changed so much for me. I get a mixed response when I say she has to be one of my all time fave authors – either you get it or you don’t.
Her Characters and their antics light up dull days and take me to a place of pure fantasy which quite frankly I enjoy being. I especially needed it when my little boy Harry was born and fed every 2 hours for the first few months. Nobody could have prepared me for the pure exhaustion, I finally understood why it has been used as a form of torture. Been woken every 2 hours, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for 5 months because he wouldn’t take a bottle was almost soul destroying. People always used to say you don’t know tiredness until you become a parent, I used to laugh and think you have obviously never had a stressful job. I almost felt like it was my punishment for being so judgemental. Those fist few months were a haze of physical pain, pure joy, loneliness and exhaustion. Jilly Cooper and the easy listening of her stories saved me. The characters became my friends and their joy and pain was felt deeply (don’t think the hormones helped)
Don’t get me wrong it’s not just Jilly Cooper – I love a wide selection of Audiobooks and Podcasts. I’m a big fan of a real life crime such as ‘Serial’ & ‘Sword and Scale’. But nothing beats the ‘Archers’ in the morning whilst I make the first cup of tea, let the dogs out and give Harry his bottle. Those 13 minutes are probably some of my favourite.
For me its the escapism an Audiobook or Podcast can give you, and quite frankly when I have only left the house to walk the dogs it can get quite lonely. I look forward to a new podcast ‘Loose Lips’ by Luisa Zissman and Anna Williamson every week who keep it very real and somehow make you feel like you are in a room chatting with friends about everyday crap…I love it!
I appreciate that most people might not get the whole audiobook/podcast excitement but honestly give it a go if you haven’t already -it’s a game changer.
There is something for everyone – maybe you want to learn a new language, listen about history or science, or like me get involved in some escapism mixed in with real life murder and everyday chat with Luisa & Anna.
